The notes you pick are reduced to their pitch classes and compared with the interval pattern of each chord type, from triads to sevenths, sixths, suspended and added-note chords, with every note tried as the root. The lowest note you play sets the bass, so an inversion is shown as a slash chord such as C/E.

A chord is in root position when its root is the lowest note. When another chord tone is in the bass it is an inversion, written with a slash: C/E is a C major chord with E in the bass. Some note sets have two good names, such as C6 and Am7/C, so the finder lists both.
