Bass Booster: Boost the Bass of Any Song

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no account, because all the processing happens on your own device.

MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC files that your browser can play. You download the boosted song as a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV file, the same quality as a CD.

No. The file is decoded and processed inside your browser and is never sent to GrooveSheet or anyone else.

A moderate boost of +3 to +8 dB sounds natural on most songs. Very large boosts make the limiter work hard, which flattens the punch of the drums, so use the clip light and the Original and Boosted switch to hear when you have gone too far. The tool adds no compression of its own to the file.

Up to 15 minutes. The song is decoded into uncompressed audio in your browser, which takes far more memory than the MP3 itself, so very long files are refused rather than crashing the tab. A typical song renders in a few seconds on a computer.

Yes, in current mobile browsers such as Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. Judge the bass on headphones, because phone speakers cannot play the lowest notes. If you hear nothing on an iPhone, check that the silent switch is off.

A low shelf filter raises everything below its corner frequency by the same amount and leaves the rest of the song alone, with a gentle slope around the corner. Set it to 90 Hz and +8 dB and the kick drum and the bass guitar get louder while the vocals and guitars stay where they were. Unlike a peak EQ band, which lifts a narrow bump, a shelf lifts the whole low end, sub-bass included.

Bass carries most of a song's energy, and a finished master already peaks close to 0 dBFS, the loudest value a digital file can hold. Every +6 dB doubles the level of the boosted band, so the peaks have nowhere to go and get cut flat: that is clipping, heard as crackle and distortion. This tool takes some level off before the boost reaches a limiter, the limiter catches the peaks that are left, and the download is normalised so its loudest sample sits at -1 dBFS, which leaves room for MP3 or AAC encoding later.

Sub-bass, 20 to 60 Hz, is felt more than heard: 808s and the lowest synth notes. 60 to 120 Hz is the punch of the kick and the body of the bass guitar, whose open low E is 41.2 Hz (a five-string's low B is 30.9 Hz). 120 to 250 Hz adds warmth, but too much makes a mix muddy. Start around 70 to 100 Hz for hip hop and electronic music, and 100 to 150 Hz for rock, pop and acoustic songs.

Phone and laptop speakers hardly reproduce anything below 100 to 150 Hz, so a boost at 60 Hz does little there. The warmth control gently saturates the bass band alone, adding its overtones at two and three times the note's frequency. The ear hears that series and fills in the missing fundamental, so the bass line comes through on small speakers too. On headphones and big speakers, use a little.

No. The free tools need no account and no download. They run in your browser, and nothing you play or drop in is uploaded.
