Reverse Audio: Play Any Song Backwards

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no account, because all the processing happens on your own device.

MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC files that your browser can play. You download the reversed audio as a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV file, which any editor or phone can open.

No. The file is decoded and reversed inside your browser and is never sent to GrooveSheet or anyone else.

No. Reversing puts the same samples in the opposite order without changing any of them. The WAV keeps the quality of the file you dropped in; an MP3 does not get better, but it does not get worse either.

Up to 15 minutes. The audio is decoded into uncompressed samples in your browser, which takes far more memory than the file itself, so very long files are refused rather than crashing the tab. Plain reversing is instant; the reverse reverb takes a few seconds.

Yes, in current mobile browsers such as Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. Drag one finger across the waveform to choose a part. If you hear nothing on an iPhone, check that the silent switch is off.

Drop the file and it is reversed straight away: press play to hear it backwards. The page decodes the song into its raw samples and writes them in the opposite order, last sample first, so nothing is lost or added. Reversing the result again gives back the original exactly. Download it as a WAV when it sounds right.

Backmasking means recording a sound backwards onto a track, so it only makes sense when the record is played in reverse. The Beatles brought reversed tape into pop in 1966, with backwards vocals at the end of "Rain". In the 1980s some campaigners in the US claimed rock records hid messages in reverse, and in 1990 Judas Priest were taken to court in Nevada over claimed hidden messages; the judge ruled for the band. Most words people hear in reversed songs are the brain finding speech in random sounds, but deliberate messages exist, such as the one Pink Floyd put backwards into "Empty Spaces" on The Wall (1979).

Reverse a vocal, add reverb, then reverse the result again: the voice plays forwards, but its reverb now swells up into each word instead of trailing after it. Producers have used it since the late 1960s on vocal entries, snare hits and transitions into a chorus. Pick Reverse Reverb, drag over the part (a sung phrase works best) and set how long the swell lasts.

Drag across the waveform to choose a part. Only that stretch is reversed and the rest of the song plays normally, so you can flip one word, a cymbal crash or a drum fill. A reversed cymbal is the classic swell into a chorus. Clear the selection to reverse the whole file again, and use the Original and Reversed switch to compare.

No. The free tools need no account and no download. They run in your browser, and nothing you play or drop in is uploaded.

Yes, in any current mobile browser. MIDI keyboards and pad controllers need Chrome, Edge or Opera, on a computer or an Android phone.

GrooveSheet turns any song into sheet music, MIDI and separated stems with AI: drums, bass, guitar, piano and more. Every song starts with a free 30-second preview.
