Pitch detection is precise on a clear, steady note, and each held note is rounded to the nearest semitone. The result depends far more on how you sing on the day: a cold voice, a noisy room or stopping early all narrow it. The voice type is an estimate from range alone, so treat it as a starting point, not a verdict.

Your voice changes through the day and from day to day: warm-up, tiredness, hydration, a cold and the time of day can move either end by a few semitones, and so can how far you dare to push. For a fair picture, warm up, test two or three times and go by the notes you reach comfortably every time.

Usually, yes, within limits set by your anatomy. Regular practice with good technique, especially breath support and moving smoothly through your register breaks, often adds a few semitones at the top and turns notes you could only touch into usable ones. The low end moves less. Training rarely changes your voice type; the comfortable middle of your voice matters more than its extremes.

There is no single good number. Many untrained adults sing about 1.5 to 2 octaves, trained classical singers usually work with around 2 octaves or a little more, and a few singers reach 3 or more. For most songs, a steady, comfortable octave and a half matters more than a wide range with strained edges.

Press Start the Test and allow the microphone. In step one, sing an easy note and walk down slowly, holding each note for about a second; in step two, walk up the same way. Pitch detection runs in your browser and a note only counts once you have held it steadily for about 0.3 seconds, so slides, cracks and background noise are left out, and a lone reading far from the rest (an octave jump, a cough) is ignored. You get your lowest and highest notes in scientific pitch notation, where middle C is C4, the span in semitones and octaves, your range on a piano keyboard and the voice type whose typical range is closest.

Classical singing uses seven main voice types. Bass: about E2 to E4 (82 to 330 Hz). Baritone: A2 to A4 (110 to 440 Hz). Tenor: C3 to C5 (131 to 523 Hz). Countertenor: roughly G3 to E5, sung mostly in falsetto. Contralto: F3 to F5 (175 to 698 Hz). Mezzo-soprano: A3 to A5 (220 to 880 Hz). Soprano: C4 to C6 (262 to 1047 Hz). Neighbouring types overlap by well over an octave, which is why range alone cannot settle a voice type: teachers also listen to tessitura (where your voice is comfortable for long stretches), timbre (how dark or bright it sounds) and where your register breaks fall.

Warm up first: a few minutes of humming, lip trills and gentle sirens usually adds a note or two at each end. Sing on an open vowel such as 'ah' or 'oo' at a comfortable volume, and stop where your voice turns breathy, creaky or strained; a note you can only croak or shout is not part of your usable range. Test in a quiet room with the microphone about an arm's length away or closer, take headphones off so you hear your own voice naturally, and turn music and TV off. Many singers find low notes easier in the morning and high notes easier once the voice is warm, so test more than once.

Compare your range with a song's melody: if its lowest and highest notes sit inside your range, with a little room at the top, you can sing it as written. If not, change the key. Transposing moves every note by the same number of semitones, so a melody from A3 to E5 fits a range of F3 to C5 once it is lowered by 4 semitones. Many pop melodies span about an octave to an octave and a half, so a comfortable range of that size already covers a lot of songs.
