Nightcore Maker: Speed Up a Song and Raise the Pitch

Yes. It is free, adds no watermark and needs no account, because all the processing happens on your own device.

MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC files that your browser can play. You download the edit as a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz WAV file, ready for a video editor.

No. The file is decoded and processed inside your browser and is never sent to GrooveSheet or anyone else.

Raising the pitch also raises the formants, the resonances that give a voice its character, so a sped-up voice sounds younger and brighter. That is the nightcore sound, not a fault. The speed change itself adds no noise, and the WAV keeps the quality of the file you dropped in.

Up to 15 minutes. The song is decoded into uncompressed audio in your browser, which takes far more memory than the MP3 itself, so very long files are refused rather than crashing the tab. A typical song renders in a few seconds on a computer.

Yes, in current mobile browsers such as Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android, and the WAV can go straight into a video app. If you hear nothing on an iPhone, check that the silent switch is off.

A nightcore edit plays a song faster and higher at the same time, usually about a quarter faster. The vocals get a bright, young sound and the beat gets more energy. Because speed and pitch move together, it works like playing a record too fast rather than modern time stretching. On YouTube the edits are often shown with an anime picture.

The name comes from Nightcore, a Norwegian duo of two school friends, Thomas S. Nilsen and Steffen Søderholm, who in 2002 began releasing trance and eurodance tracks sped up and pitched up. They said the name meant they were the core of the night, music to dance to all night long. Their tracks later spread on YouTube, and "nightcore" became the word for any song edited the same way.

Playing the same samples faster raises every frequency by the same ratio as the speed. The change in semitones is 12 × log2(speed): 1.25× is about +3.9 semitones, just under a major third, and 1.5× is +7 semitones, a perfect fifth. A 3:30 song at 1.25× lasts 2:48. That is why nightcore cannot keep the original key; to change only the speed, use the Song Speed Changer.

The opposite edit plays a song at around 0.8×, about 3.9 semitones lower and a quarter longer, with a big reverb for a dreamy, heavy sound. It became a popular style on YouTube in the late 2010s. Press the Slowed + Reverb preset, then raise the reverb until the song sounds like it is in a large hall.

No. The free tools need no account and no download. They run in your browser, and nothing you play or drop in is uploaded.
